Reasons Cigarette Advertising Should Be Banned

 

 In Japan, it is normal for us to buy cigarette in convenience stores and vending machines. In other words, it is also easy for children to buy cigarette in these stores although we can not buy cigarette until they will be 20years old. Furthermore, cigarette companies advertise their products in TV commercial, train, bus, web site, store and vending machine. And today, one of the famous Japanese cigarette company (JAPAN TOBACCO INC.) advertises their volunteer and corporate support of the arts in TV commercial to raise their company’s image. But, I think that government should ban cigarette advertising. So, I have some reasons about that.

 First, smoking can have many problems in our health. For example, if we smoke cigarette fluently, a risk of lung cancer will be raised and other cancers. According to a survey(2012), amount of person who died by smoking is about 120000 people per year. The survey was collected by Japanese Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. If you do not want to die by cancer, it is obvious that you should not smoke.

 Second, if we allow cigarette companies to advertise their products on TV, newspaper, magazine and journal, it would affect the children more bad. For example, their advertisements recommend that children to smoke, because advertisements are very cool and trendy. And children have a desire to do any forbidden things like a smoking. The average of smoking experience about Japanese high school students show that over 50% male students and around 30% female students have an experience of smoking. In junior high school students case, one- third students also have an experience of smoking. This result does not have no connection with cigarette advertisements, because advertisements are inflammatory for children.

 Third, almost all cigarette advertising pictures are pictures that men stand with smoking. It is also a big problem, smoking while walking makes small children dangerous. For example, it is possible for small children to be burnt by flam of cigarette when people smoke while walking, because a position of the cigarette is close in children’s face. In fact, some small children were burnt by the flame. And I have heard that one child lost the sight of one eyes to be burnt. In Japanese, some local governments enacted street smoking ban ordinance for protecting small children.

Fourth, smoking also has not only cancers but also other problem. One of the problem is passive smoking. The passive smoking gives some health problems to us. For example, sore throat, cough, headache, nausea and asthma. According to WHO, the amount of person who died by passive smoking is about 600000people all over the world.   

 In my conclusion, smoking has many problems and dangerous. In other words, it has no redeeming features.

 Finally, government must ban cigarette advertisement as soon as possible to protect children and other people’s health. And the advertisement affect a bad influence. If they do not, many people will die because of smoking and passive smoking.

 Now I have studied abroad in manila(a capital of Philippines). I spend a plain life in the city without hindrance. But I have many topics that I should write a journal about urban environmental problems in this city. because I major environmental law.

In comparison with Japan called ‘an environmental advanced nation’ in general, I can not help but say that the urban environment is so bad. They always have traffic jams from morning to night in main streets. And these massive amounts of exhaust gas are always released every day. In addition that, many city’s rivers runs thick, a lots of wastes float up in rivers, there are bad smells even if you are away from a riverside. Furthermore, cityscapes are also bad because many garbage are in streets, it is hygienically bad. That is to say, ‘Manila has both Air pollution, Water pollution, and the issue of waste ’.

Well, what is the main reason of these environmental problems? I will focus on the Air pollution in this journal. At first, I think that this problem is caused by undeveloped railway network. In fact, they have a few railways, and don’t have subways although the population of Metro manila is over 20000000people. Therefore, Manila cannot help being an automobile society, and it closely tied chronic traffic jam, emitting a large amount of exhaust gas. Moreover, a lot of cars which is running in the city are almost of old-model cars. In addition that, many Shared taxi called Jeepney are running everywhere in this country, these jeepneys are running with emitting black smoke.

So, how should Philippines government solve this Air pollution? I think that the government has to grapple with three projects at least. First, the government has to change an automobile society to a railroad society to extend railways. Second, they should establish subsidy system of buying eco-car. Third, they should abolish jeepney and create jobs for jeepney drivers. If they grapple with these projects, they can decrease Air pollution because the root cause will be cut off. I also think that if they don’t do that, this problem cannot be solved forever.

I think that Japanese people is citizen who are the poorest at speaking English in developed countries. The reason is Japanese government has not attached importance to speak English in our English education although many disputants have already pointed out this fact. Therefore, few teachers can speak English fluently because this present continues for decades. I also suspect whether English teachers can speak English fluently or not.

This reason is very simple. So, there is necessity for us to speak English is close to nil. Japan does not have an experience which is dominated long-term by English-speaking countries. Furthermore, Japan is not a multiracial country. Therefore, it is enough for us to speak only Japanese in daily life.

However, the international society came to a stage which people, commodities, money and service come and go frequently nowadays. And we cannot avoid touching foreign countries somewhere. In additional that, this tendency will not be stopped. After that, when we encounter some scene which we must communicate with foreign people, we must speak English to communicate with them. These days, our government has started English lessons in primary school. But I doubt this effectiveness because we could not get English speaking skill although we had studied English for 6years.

So, how can we get English speaking skill through our English lessons in secondary education? I think that the government should change English speaking lessons to be a main in English lessons at first. Because if we don’t have little chance to speak English, we cannot get English speaking skill. Second, they should promote a chance of studying abroad for students. If students have the chance, they can improve their English skill dramatically. Third, they should increase amount of ALT(Assistant Language Teacher) in junior high schools and high schools. Fourth, I really think that when people get a teacher’s licence, the government should impose them to career of studying abroad. If they do, almost of teachers in secondary education can teach each subject in English after 30 years. 

 Finally, if the government really would like students to be a talented person who can make out in the international society, they should change our English education in secondary education as soon as possible.
